Milk and Honey Bar: Review

“Champagne bar with Parisian flair” 

Avid concert-goers had their wishes fulfilled when British sensation, Ed Sheeran, announced that he would be performing in South Africa. Not only was his ‘Divide Tour’ a smashing success, but he paved the way for his opener, Passenger, to secure a stadium tour in late 2019.

As most Durbanites know, our sweet little coastal town falls just below the radar of touring musicians. But on the bright side, when international artists do decide to visit South Africa, nobody is more prepared for travel adventures than a Durbanite.

That being said, my family and I were more than happy to convert a concert experience into a mini-adventure when we touched down in Jozi. There were several gastro-pubs on the list, but Milk and Honey was at the very top.

Milk and Honey at Monte Casino

I first encountered ‘Milk and Honey’ while scrolling through my Instagram feed, and since then, I have heard nothing but glowing reviews.

So of course, we had to check it out for ourselves! I’m very happy to report that the experience was every bit as glamorous as Instagram depicted.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendliest team. Although we were unable to secure a reservation earlier on, the staff were incredible and offered us a table almost immediately.

Keeping with the Parisian theme, Milk and Honey’s decor would fit comfortably between the pages of Anna Wintour’s favourite Vogue edition.

After perusing the extensive cocktail menu, the girls and I decided on Milk and Honey’s signature cocktail. The signature cocktail was light and refreshing, and consisted of Ciroc Mango, Coconut Syrup, Lemon Juice & Pineapple Juice. The menu listed this drink as ‘the perfect sharing cocktail’, and boy was that the understatement of the year! These cocktails were perhaps the largest, most exquisitely presented drinks in Monte Casino. They arrived in beautifully preserved ostrich eggs, with rose-gold straws peeking out.

The signature cocktail was the perfect solution to Jozi’s warm weather, and it tasted even better than the menu described.

The first few sips transported us to a Hawaiian island, where PiƱa coladas flowed constantly, and the sun never set.

With an underage munchkin at our table, we were worried that the restaurant would be unable to cater for her needs. But of course, Milk and Honey surprised us once again with their perfectly curated list of mocktails. The munchkin ordered a strawberry daquiri, and was as happy as any Gen Z with internet access could be.

While the cocktails flowed, and the munchkin sipped what she described as “the best strawberry daquiri” she had ever had, we snacked on Milk and Honey’s signature popcorn.

A combination of sweet and salty goodness is enough to make any foodie happy, but this particular honey-drizzled treat was the star of the show.

Not only did this Parisian-themed bar provide the perfect aesthetic for our Instagram feeds, but it also proved why it is a cult favourite among local foodies.

If you’re looking for a unique cocktail experience, with a luxurious twist, I highly recommend Milk and Honey Bar in Monte Casino.
