5 Podcasts That Don’t Suck

Advertisements

Even though Podcasts have been around since forever, I was never really inclined to invest my time in them. Perhaps I never found a podcaster that piqued my interest or spoke about topics that I could relate to. But thankfully, I decided to give podcasts a second chance, and I’ve been laughing my way through traffic ever since.

After some thorough research, I managed to round up 5 podcasts that are so great, you’ll wonder why you never listened to them before.

1. “Views” with David Dobrik and Jason Nash

Warning: Do not listen to this podcast in public because you will most definitely look like a lunatic, laughing maniacally to yourself.

Anything that features the comedic brilliance of David Dobrik and Jason Nash is guaranteed to induce bouts of laughter. So its no surprise that the duo’s podcast, “Views” which airs every Thursday night, sits comfortably at the top of the comedy charts on Spotify.

David Dobrik is a 22 year old YouTube sensation with an impressive collection of vlogs under his belt. Together with fellow 45 year old vlogger Jason Nash, these two have successfully produced hours of A-grade banter for listeners to enjoy.

“Views” allows fans of Dobrik to delve deeper into the makings of this internet sensation. The unscripted story telling and personal anecdotes that they share ultimately humanise the larger than life character that is David Dobrik. With Nash as comedic support, the podcast is reminiscent of a group of friends joking around and poking fun at one another.

Thousands have compared David Dobrik’s vlog squad to the 90s sitcom “F.R.I.E.N.D.S” and the Views Podcast is further proof of this. Listening to Dobrik and Nash retell stories of risque adventures and crazy romances, listeners will be transported from their traffic-filled commute to the cosy familiarity of Central Perk coffee house.

2. Modern Love with WBUR and the New York Times

modern-love-courtesy-NYT

Where do I even begin?!

Modern Love is a popular New York Times column wherein readers submit their tales of love, loss and matters of the heart. These stories were expertly transformed into an audio experience through the creation of the Modern Love Podcast which is available on Spotify.

Hosted by the calming voice of Meghna Chakrabarti, Modern Love allows listeners to immerse themselves in the authentic human experience.

The stories are brought to life by Hollywood favourites such as Shameless star Emmy Rossum, Titanic’s Kate Winslet, Love and Other Drugs star Jake Gyllenhaal.

Each episode, which is approximately an hour long, delves deep within the intricacies of 21st century love. The concept of dating is broken down as it pertains to modern romantics. Heartache is explained through the lens of people who never fully achieve closure as a result of social media. Each story is packed with emotion, humour and poignant relatability across various age groups.

You will cry either from laughter or resonance, but trust me, you will cry. So keep the tissues on hand and enjoy a ride on this rollercoaster of human emotion.

3. I’m Sorry Dad with Ry Doon and Brandon Calvillo

600x600bb

Brought to you by the hilariously self-dubbed “I’m Sorry Dad Boys”, this comedy podcast is a laugh a minute.

Hosted by film-maker Brandon Calvillo and stand up comedian Ryan Doon, the weekly podcast is a series of hysterical anecdotes and expert story telling by some of YouTube’s most underrated creators.

Fair warning, the podcast is not for the faint-hearted, nor is it technically appropriate for listeners under the age of 16. But semantics aside, this podcast is 100% without a doubt hilarious. Crude sexual innuendos, relatable meme culture, and stories that explore millennial nuances, this podcast is packed with equal parts lad-humour and a healthy dose of realism, gender equality and intelligent discussions.

Calvillo and Doon are often joined by fellow comedians such Jason Nash and Alex Ernst whose personal experiences also add to the overall humour of the podcast.

You can catch these guys every week on Spotify! Make sure to listen closely for details about upcoming comedy shows.

10 Signs You’re Secretly a Wellness Hoe

Advertisements

What on earth is a wellness hoe?

Don’t worry, I was just as confused as you are. It’s not as crazy as it sounds, in fact, it may just be your secret identity.

71ae9ac6cea5f5458fc763a38764d4e1

I have scoured the internet in search of an all-encompassing definition to describe what a wellness hoe actually is. But in order to truly capture the essence of the term, I’ve compiled 10 points to help you investigate how much of a wellness hoe you are. Off we go!

1. You can’t resist a Scented Candle

Okay. I totally get this because my luxury scented candle collection is getting out of control. Basically, if the thought of a basil and mint scented candle gives you goosebumps, or a french vanilla creme brulee candle makes you want to scream with excitement, you’re a wellness hoe. And its not just the glorious blend of aromas that send tingles up your spine, the jar is important too! Think rose gold, minimalist glass and fancy fonts. Oh my God, I can already smell all the new candles I’ll be buying tomorrow.

2. You are the Queen of Journals

If you’re anything like me, you have more journals than you can count. They’re strewn about your house, waiting for you to pick up a pen and immortalize your memories, emotions, poetry etc. You have a journal for recipes and meal plans. You have a journal for documenting each day. You may even have a journal dedicated to all the cute dogs you see throughout the week (which is of course, the best kind of journal!) No matter what you use your special journals for, we can all agree that writing/doodles go hand in hand with wellness.

3. Coconut Oil is your solution to everything

Ahhh coconut oil. The most versatile of all the oils if you ask me. Looking for a 1-ingredient hair mask? Coconut oil. Skin needs some extra moisture? Coconut oil. Existential Crisis? Coconut oil! There are very few things that coconut oil can’t fix. If you’re anything like me, you buy it by the truckload and use it daily! If this has prompted you to run out to the store and buy a big tub right now, make sure you choose organic extra virgin coconut oil. Enjoy and welcome to the coconut club!

4. Athleisure dominates your wardrobe

If you already know what Athleisure is, chances are you are comfortable all day long. Athleisure is the term coined by visionaries who realised that fashion and comfort could indeed be combined! Yoga pants, Nike Air and cute hoodies are your everyday attire and you will wear it with pride to brunch and basically anywhere that requires pants.

5. Your house plants are your babies

The only millennial stereotype that I will accept is the one claiming that we are 100% obsessed with house plants. Perhaps its the minimalist aesthetic it adds to your home, or the sense of pride you feel knowing that you are capable of keeping another organism alive! All I know is that succulents, aloe plants and seedlings are the recipients of my love and the models on my Instagram feed.

6. Face Masks are your specialty

True wellness hoes know that if need be, face masks can be whipped up using whatever you have in your kitchen. From creamy avocado and cucumber to polishing brown sugar and honey, you are a wizard in the face mask department. Not only can you turn any sleepover into a spa experience, but you are on a first name basis with everyone at Lush, The Body Shop and Sephora.

7. Your kitchen is stocked like a trendy cafe

Your friends love coming over to spill tea, especially when your cupboards are filled with a variety of fancy loose leaf teas from elder flower to chamomile. Your wisdom lies in your ability to solve any problem with a hot cup of tea and good book. But its not just tea you’re passionate about, you also have a soft spot for organic coffee beans and french vanilla creamer. Yum!

8. Sleep is Everything

You prioritize your full 8 hours of sleep over pretty much everything. Nothing can compete with cozy cocoon of blankets and pillow, especially after a warm bath and a slather of peach scented body butter. You have your night time routine down to a fine art and will eliminate anyone who threatens to disrupt it. Yes, its that serious.

Friend: Meet me at the pub for drinks?

Me: It’s after 10, my bra is off, my night cream is on and I am wrapped like a burrito of happiness.

9. You’re about that Green Juice life

Yeah yeah, judge all you want, but you have to admit that drinking a green juice is like an explosion of goodness in your body. Just imagining all the vitamins and nutrients in each sip is enough to make a girl want some of that natural nectar immediately! And if you’re still not convinced, think of it like this: Green Juice is like an elixir to help combat any unplanned doughnut and pizza cheat days! Plus it actually tastes pretty good!

10. Farmers Markets over Clubs Anyday

You love a bit of spontaneity and dancing, but given the choice between a trip to the farmers market and a packed club full of drunken strangers, and the farmers market wins every single time. Perhaps you’re like me, a total foodie who falls in love with artisanal bread and colourful flowers. If you are, you’re likely to enjoy iced coffees and freshly baked pastries with your closest friends at the local organic market. From handmade trinkets to hummus and olives, your adventures in the sunshine never disappoint!

If you do any of the 10 things above, congratulations, you’re a wellness hoe! Enjoy a life filled with happiness!

Brandon Calvillo: Short Films That Make You Think

Have you ever scrolled through YouTube, not really looking for anything specific, and then all of a sudden, you stumble upon a goldmine?

That’s sort of what it was like when I came across Brandon Calvillo’s YouTube channel

503fc0eedae588e94a764ab3e6ae65bd

Who is he?

Brandon Calvillo is a 23 year old former Vine star (RIP Vine) who quickly rose to the top of the charts with his hilarious 6 second videos.

Together with brothers Jesse and Gregory, Brandon Calvillo has established himself as one of the most influential social media comedians.

Today, Brandon continues to entertain millions as a regular member in David Dobrik’s vlogs. He also hosts a successful podcast called “I’m sorry dad” with fellow comedian Ry Doon. Calvillo is also present within the Instagram environment, producing “silent vines” that manage to tackle political, racial and gender bias, all the while retaining comedic undertones.

His unique sense of humour played an integral role in setting him apart from other viners his age. Often thought of as satirical, dark humour, Calvillo explored avenues of comedy that forced viewers to think deeper, and in turn, revealed his own self-awareness.

His transition to YouTube was slow, but steady and currently boasts some of the best short films in the industry.

Why his short films are important:

Calvillo’s films are quite simply, works of art. The talented young creator tells stories so masterfully, that he is able to capture the intricacies of the millennial experience within a relatively short video.

Presumably drawing from his personal experiences, or perhaps observation, each video Calvillo produces leaves the viewer with a resounding sense of fascination. By making the decision to incorporate highly subjective themes such as love and loss, Calvillo writes with the entire spectrum of human emotion in mind. This is of course, no mean feat, further highlighting his immense talent.

Wbps9njx_400x400

Many have referred to Calvillo’s sense of humour as “dark” or “disturbing”. Personally, I believe that may have been his intention all along. Film is a form of art, and art is only significant when it arouses profound emotion within you. These seemingly “dark” films force viewers to evaluate the current socio-political climate by showing them a perspective they have not seen before. Personally, Calvillo’s  ability to portray this in such a subtle manner is ingenious.

Should you watch his films?

I would recommend Calvillo’s short films to everyone, especially those with an innate sense of wonder.

They are highly thought-provoking, humorous and entertaining across various age groups. Anyone seeking a deeper understanding of millennial culture will benefit greatly from these videos. The realistic portrayal of modern day relationships, international issues and the power of technology within everyday interactions is incredibly refreshing.
